Daily Life in One Piece Chapter 17

Returning to Base

My name is Alpha “Hammer” Mosen, a Navy lieutenant who has just escaped and returned.

I recently fought someone, a mighty pirate. How powerful, you ask? One of the strongest in the world, the kind who can cleave the sea with a sword and shatter mountains with a punch. No, I wasn’t his match. I got beaten up badly, really badly.

But that’s not important. I don’t mind getting beaten. I’m used to it. I’m a Navy officer, a wandering one. I wanted to return to my unit, and after many hardships, I finally found a way.

I called my base, speaking to my most respected leader. Hearing from me after six months, he seemed happy and hung up the phone immediately without a response.

How could this be? This wasn’t in the script, damn it. Can’t you understand the feelings of someone who wants to return home? I was immensely saddened.

To my surprise, I was still able to return. But why did I feel no eagerness or impatience upon knowing I could return? This is a sad story.

Shortly after, while I was still bewildered and unsure where to go, Franca called back. After confirming my location, he prepared to send a small escort ship to bring me back.

The Red Force had already set sail at the port, heading to its next destination.

On the deck, Shanks stood at the bow, deep in thought.

“What an interesting Navy kid. Too bad he’s a Navy officer,” Yasopp remarked, looking at the receding town, wondering if his son Usopp would turn out as exceptional.

“He has his own sense of justice, unlike those other Navy officers,” Ben Beckman added, coming over. Through his interactions with Mosen, he realized that Mosen’s worldview differed from most Navy officers.

Mosen’s actions were based on his previous life’s values. He didn’t see himself as wrong; rather, this world, with its twisted systems, strict hierarchies, and varying strengths, led to so much inequality.

Commoners were at the bottom of the food chain, while decadent nobles occupied high positions. Powerful, brutal pirates could become emperors. To Mosen, this was bizarre.

Not to mention the Tenryuubito at the top, who were a waste of air.

In the Navy, things were more straightforward. Power brought respect, even though justice could sometimes be twisted.

Shanks and his crew had dreams, valued freedom, and had their principles. They could be ruthless if their bottom line were crossed. To Mosen, this was what actual pirates were. This is why he got along well with Shanks and his crew. Had it been someone like Blackbeard, he wouldn’t have revealed his identity at all.

The Straw Hat crew was more like adventurers. Despite loving his family, Whitebeard had a pirate crew that undoubtedly had innocent blood on their hands. Others were even worse, being outright criminal gangs.

“The future is unpredictable. That’s a kid who values freedom. Maybe one day he’ll retire from the Navy and go on adventures,” Shanks said, removing his straw hat to smooth his wind-tossed red hair. “With friends, drinks, and new adventures, life won’t be boring. Let’s have a party, guys.”

“Damn captain, you want to eat everything we just bought?”

“What’s the big deal? Food’s meant to be eaten. Besides, today’s a great day for a party!”

“Don’t make excuses, you fool.”

Laughter and noise faded as the ship sailed away.

……

Three days later, at the 153rd Base.

“These past three days have been troublesome for you, Colonel. Colonel Franca sends his regards,” said Captain Xindryan, who had come to retrieve Mosen. Now a major, he seemed poised to take over the base.

“No need for thanks, Major Xindryan. Lieutenant Mosen has been beneficial to us. We should be thanking him,” the colonel replied, though inwardly thinking, Please take him back. I’m on the verge of a breakdown.

He had initially thought Mosen was just a skilled fighter. But these days, he discovered that Mosen’s mouth was his real weapon, far more potent than his fighting skills.

Since avenging his parents, Mosen has become more carefree, and his talkative and humorous personality dominates. After six months of isolation with only tasteless birds and beasts for company, he had gotten used to talking to himself.

Suddenly, back in a familiar environment, Mosen couldn’t stop talking.

The colonel had been the primary victim these past few days.

Mosen didn’t know if this was the Navy unit that the Black Cat Pirates would later wipe out. But having been well-treated at the base, he felt he should show gratitude.

This upright Navy colonel had left a good impression on Mosen. So, over the past three days, he sparred with the colonel, pushing him to the brink of a mental breakdown.

The colonel and many soldiers at the base, challenged by Mosen, cried.

As for their future fate, whether they’d be wiped out or a new leader like Morgan would emerge, Mosen didn’t concern himself with that.

“Well then, Major Xindryan, it’s time to return to base. As the base instructor, it’s rude to be absent for so long. I can’t wait to make up for the lost six months of training,” Mosen interrupted their conversation, eager to get moving. He didn’t see the glares from the two senior officers, who looked ready to strangle him.

Taking his long sword, Mosen headed out first.

Seeing the colonel still trying to follow at the base gate, Mosen stopped him. He didn’t care for such formalities.

“Thank you for the clothes and hospitality these past few days.”

Wearing a proper Navy uniform and the justice cloak, Mosen wasn’t bare-chested. For a moment, he felt… a bit uncomfortable.

Waving goodbye, Mosen, Xindryan, and two soldiers from the 77th Base departed.

Finally, I can go home!
