Daily Life in One Piece Chapter 28

Xiu’er, Is That You

Upon arriving at Marine Headquarters, Mosen was taken to the recruit camp. Smoker then left with Franca and Winst.

Mosen, carrying his belongings, was bewildered. That petty guy Smoker couldn’t handle a simple comment about not being as handsome. Throwing Mosen into the camp and leaving was just petty.

“Are you Lieutenant Mosen?”

At the entrance of the recruit camp, a Marine soldier emerged from inside.

“Oh, it looks like they’ve already been notified. Such a tsundere captain… Yes, I’m Mosen!”

Mosen decided to retract his words. It seemed Smoker was reliable after all, with a cold exterior but a warm heart.

“Please follow me, Lieutenant Mosen. I’ll take you to report in.”

The soldier led Mosen through a maze of paths, eventually arriving at an office.

Standing before the door, the soldier knocked.

“Instructor Shuzo, the new recruit has arrived.”

The sign on the office door indicated it belonged to Vice Chief Instructor Shuzo, a brigadier general responsible for handling daily tasks in the recruit camp alongside Zephyr and one of the Rokushiki instructors.

“Thank you, soldier. Send him in.”

A deep voice came from behind the door.

Mosen pushed the door open to see a burly, dark-skinned man sitting behind a desk.

The man had only a tiny tuft of hair on top of his head, tied into three small braids forming a unique ponytail. His eyebrows and the ends of his mustache curled upward, and his chin was covered with a thick, well-groomed beard.

His long arms rested on the desk, holding a file with Mosen’s photo.

“Alpha Mosen, 15 years and 7 months old, adopted son of the Alpha family from Mido Village in the East Blue. Joined the Marines after his adoptive parents were killed by pirates. At 13, killed Red Eye, a pirate worth 18 million Berries, and subsequently captured over a hundred pirates in the East Blue.”

“Six months ago, he went after the Hog Pirate Crew alone, capturing all except Hog. Lost in a storm while pursuing Hog and missing for six months.”

“Reappeared in the East Blue’s Shells Town with the Red-Haired Pirates, fought Shanks, and was severely injured.”

“A Sube Sube no Mi user, a sword master capable of cutting steel, and has just awakened Observation Haki. Kid, I must say, it’s been a long time since someone this interesting showed up at headquarters!”

Shuzo read Mosen’s file aloud, then stood up and approached him.

“You’re impressive!”

Mosen blushed slightly, feeling quite pleased. Look at that, he thought, what a way to put it. No wonder he’s a brigadier general while Smoker is just a captain.

“However, in the recruit camp, I hope you forget all that. Here, you’re just a recruit. You must follow the camp’s rules and obey the instructors absolutely. Do you understand?”

Mosen was speechless. So, everything I said was nonsense. These officers are all the same. I just got here, and you’re already playing the good cop, bad cop routine.

Internally, Mosen was swearing, but outwardly, he smiled politely.

“Yes, Instructor. I was the most obedient at the 77th Base, known as the Obedient Handsome Little Prince.”

Shuzo’s ponytail stood up, and his mustache twitched. “Just answer with ‘Yes’ or ‘No.’ Do you understand?”

I don’t believe a word you say, Shuzo thought. If you’re not a troublemaker, I’ll eat my hat live at the headquarters plaza.

“Yes, Sir.”

“Good. The training method here is tailored to each individual. Sign here, and I’ll take you for a test to understand your current condition. Afterward, specialized researchers will develop a training plan for you.”

Mosen kept his mouth shut, knowing it was best not to provoke someone he’d be working under for a while.

In the recruit camp’s testing room, Mosen reluctantly took off his Justice Cape, placing it aside. He moved more freely without it, though it added to his charm.

The testing room was filled with machines Mosen had never seen, and many researchers were ready to record the results.

A tester led Mosen to a machine with a cushion made of unknown animal hide on its front and a display screen above it.

“Hit the pad with your full strength, both a punch and a kick.”

“Boom! Boom!”

“Punch force: 5805kg, Kick force: 8228kg!”

The testers were astonished. These numbers surpassed most graduates of the recruit camp.

Mosen felt indifferent. He hadn’t even used his full strength, but the machine was quite sturdy, not breaking from his strikes.

Next came more tests.

Sprint burst speed: 100m/1.8s

Average running speed: 100m/2.86s

Muscle tissue strength: 1850

Nerve reaction speed: …

Mosen went through about ten different tests. He understood the speed and strength parts but needed clarification on the rest.

Who am I? Where am I? What am I doing?

Finally, he stood before a robot, and the tester explained they were about to measure his Doriki.

This he knew, as it was a direct indicator of combat power in the One Piece world.

Other than bounty amounts, which could roughly estimate a person’s strength but weren’t always accurate, Doriki values gave a clearer picture. For instance, Crocodile and Boa Hancock might have lower bounties than some Supernovas, but their strength was far more significant.

Doriki was a more precise measurement tested by the Marines and the government’s intelligence agencies.

Having sparred with Smoker many times, Mosen had a good sense of his strength and wasn’t too interested in this Doriki test.

However, he decided to hold back to ensure comprehensive training only a little.

“Alright, Lieutenant Mosen, this is a newly developed machine by the Marine Research Division to measure individual strength, currently named the Doriki Meter. You’ll need to fight this robot with all your strength for one minute. The machine inside will collect signals to accurately measure your strength.”

The researcher quickly explained and left the training area. As a non-combatant, he didn’t want to risk getting hit.

Without any warning, Mosen started fighting the robot. There wasn’t much to say to a hunk of metal.

Boom, clang, bam!

The sounds of combat echoed in the room for two minutes, but it wasn’t the kind of combat people usually enjoyed watching.

Two minutes later, Mosen finally stopped, having had his fill of fighting. The robot’s electronic voice announced the result:

“Doriki: 4800!”

At the door of the testing room, Shuzo received Mosen’s test report.

“What the… Are you kidding me?”

Shuzo’s eyes nearly popped out of his head, his ponytail and mustache standing in shock. Waves of surprise crashed over him.

Are you Xiu’er or a devil? This score rivals those of the early three Admirals, far surpassing others. This is the best result since their graduation, and Mosen has just joined the camp.

“No, I must report this to the instructor. This kind of monster, if trained well, could become the youngest Admiral in a few years.”
