One Piece: Song of Despair Chapter 13

Setting Sail for Beast Island

Three warships departed from Marineford a few days later, sailing into the sunrise and cutting through the waves.

The ocean was calm, a deep blue like spring, and seagulls circled overhead. The sea breeze was refreshing, filling everyone with a sense of tranquility.

Standing alone on the deck, facing the rising sun, Nokiyoru’s dark, shining eyes were filled with a sense of new beginnings.

“It’s getting closer… so close now…” he muttered, staring at the life-giving sun and silently vowing, “One day, I will become the sun, high in the sky, shining down on the world.”

“This trip to Beast Island is crucial. I must maximize my strength and secure first place in the competition. With my own warship, I can quickly accumulate military merit, rising to Rear Admiral, Vice Admiral, and even Admiral.”

Last night, after finishing his training, Zephyr announced that they would be heading to Beast Island for half a month of rigorous training.

Beast Island, located near the Calm Belt, is a rare and dangerous place, home to ancient creatures and other strange beings. It’s said that even a Vice Admiral could face significant challenges there. The harsh environment makes it an ideal training ground for the Navy.

One fascinating fact about the island is that some of its creatures can use Haki, a phenomenon that had puzzled Navy scientists but was never fully explained.

“Interesting. Not only can I grow stronger, but I might find other opportunities,” Nokiyoru thought, glancing coldly at Akainu nearby.

Sensing Nokiyoru’s gaze, Akainu turned and snorted, his expression dark.

As for Chaton, Nokiyoru completely ignored him.

Watching this exchange, Garp munched on a donut, his face full of amusement.

Unexpectedly, Garp was also part of this expedition, having returned the day before. Upon his arrival, he was summoned by Kong.

“Garp, I need you to join Zephyr on this trip to Beast Island,” Kong said seriously in his office.

“Why? Zephyr can handle it alone. I just got back and want some time off,” Garp grumbled, not very enthusiastic.

“I’m worried Zephyr might not be able to handle everything alone. These recruits are the future of the Navy, and minimizing casualties is crucial,” Kong sighed, feeling the weight of time and the inevitability of aging.

“You’re worried about Nokiyoru and Akainu?” Garp’s eyes twinkled with understanding.

“Yes, those two have immense potential. Losing either would be a significant blow to the Navy. I’m also concerned about collateral damage,” Kong admitted, rubbing his head tiredly.

“That is a problem,” Garp agreed, thinking of the fierce Nokiyoru. If given the chance, Nokiyoru might kill Akainu and Chaton. Even bystanders might get caught in the crossfire. Despite stepping back last time, Huang was still on Nokiyoru’s hit list. Garp chuckled, knowing that even if Huang didn’t provoke Nokiyoru, Nokiyoru might still hold a grudge.

“Both are evenly matched in strength. Beating each other is one thing, but killing is another,” Garp mused.

“I forgot to tell you, two months ago, Zephyr took Nokiyoru as his disciple, teaching him wholeheartedly. And the boy you brought back has become quite close to Nokiyoru. Just in case… I want you there,” Kong explained.

“Is that so!” Garp was surprised but then laughed heartily. “I didn’t expect Kuzan to become friends with that boy.”

“I’m not joking, Garp. The Five Elders have shown interest in Akainu. You must protect him if necessary,” Kong insisted.

“Really?” Garp raised an eyebrow but then shrugged. “Kong, you worry too much. Akainu might have the upper hand.”

“If that happens, Akainu will undoubtedly die, while Nokiyoru might only be severely injured. You and I know that boy is no ordinary child. You’ve heard about his training, right? Even Sengoku is impressed by his dedication and resilience,” Kong argued.

“Has that kid already mastered Haki?” Garp asked, surprised.

“Most likely, yes.”

“Kids these days are terrifying. Alright, I’ll treat it as a vacation,” Garp agreed, recalling Kong’s instructions.

Now, standing on the deck, Garp watched the proud figure of Nokiyoru with interest. “Let’s see how much you can surprise me,” he thought.

Two nights passed, and on the third morning, the three warships anchored at the edge of a massive island in the Calm Belt.

On the deck, over a hundred eager recruits gazed at the island, unable to contain their excitement.

“You all know the details. Your mission is to hunt the beasts on the island. Each of you has a small recording device. It will log your kills. Be careful; some beasts can be as strong as Vice Admirals. If you’re in danger, signal, and we’ll rescue you.

Remember, you must survive on the island for half a month.

Be cautious. This island is deadly. The beasts range from five levels: low, medium, high, officer, and king, corresponding to Ensign, Lieutenant, Captain, Commodore, and Rear Admiral.

Killing a low-level beast earns one point, medium two points, and so on. The top fifty scorers will compete in a Navy tournament in two months, with unexpected rewards,” Zephyr warned repeatedly.

“Those ready, go,” he commanded. Immediately, the recruits dashed into the forest, disappearing.

“This won’t be peaceful,” Zephyr sighed as Garp laughed heartily.

“Isn’t it perfect? Something to entertain us,” Garp replied.

“Both are proud and stubborn. I wonder who will prevail this time,” Zephyr mused, watching Akainu and Nokiyoru silently confront each other at the forest’s edge.

“Don’t overthink it. Join me for some donuts,” Garp said, pulling Zephyr along.

“You’re incorrigible,” Zephyr smiled, shaking his head at his friend.

“By the way, where’s your boy Dragon? He should be back by now,” Zephyr asked.

“Don’t mention it,” Garp grumbled, clearly upset.

“Another argument?” Zephyr grinned.

“Old friend, did I make a mistake? That boy’s heart is changing,” Garp sighed.

“That’s serious. His talent is exceptional. He could fight a Vice Admiral before his first mission. If he turns to the dark side…” Zephyr began.

“Sigh… let’s just drink. I’ll deal with him later,” Garp said, grabbing a bottle and drinking deeply.

“You…” Zephyr shook his head, silently drinking with his friend.
