“Tomorrow is Friday!” Obito eagerly answered the question.
“Tomorrow is Thursday, and Mokutsuki-sensei probably isn’t asking about the day of the week,” Rin corrected.
She thought Mokutsuki wouldn’t need to ask students what day it was, and besides, he wouldn’t gather them just to ask that.
“I’ve been using shadow clones to attend school lately, so I haven’t been paying attention to the dates. Turns out today is Wednesday,” Obito sheepishly explained.
“Is it the day when the yakiniku restaurant has a discount? Or is it the anniversary of being a teacher?” Obito continued guessing.
“Are you going to teach us a new powerful forbidden technique?” Might Guy speculate?
“Probably not, since we haven’t even mastered the breathing techniques, and Shisui isn’t here,” Obito noted.
“Tomorrow is Shisui’s birthday,” Mokutsuki revealed without further suspense.
“I didn’t call Shisui here on purpose. We’ll give him a surprise tomorrow,” Mokutsuki explained with a smile.
Directly announcing it was fine, but Mokutsuki believed a sudden surprise would yield a more significant reaction. Extreme emotions might trigger an unprecedented reward, perhaps even a skill above mastery.
“So, it’s Shisui’s birthday tomorrow,” Obito realized.
“But why didn’t he tell us beforehand?” Obito scratched his head, confused. He felt that starting preparations tonight might be too late.
“Maybe he didn’t want to bother anyone,” Rin suggested.
She had joined the group later, so she had yet to learn Shisui as long as Might Guy and Obito, but they had been acquainted for about two months.
Shisui struck her as someone who quietly handled everything independently and didn’t like to trouble others.
During their regular training sessions, Shisui mostly worked independently, only seeking Mokutsuki’s help when he hit a wall. This was quite different from Obito, who quickly asked Mokutsuki for guidance whenever he encountered a problem.
“How could it be a bother? Celebrating a friend’s birthday is natural,” Obito said, still puzzled.
“Let’s not discuss that right now. We should plan how to celebrate Shisui’s birthday,” Mokutsuki suggested.
Obito’s personality made it hard for him to understand Shisui’s actions.
“Let’s buy a birthday cake,” Obito proposed.
“I’ll get him a good set of workout clothes,” Might Guy said enthusiastically.
“Since it’s a surprise, we should only let Shisui know at the last moment. We can decorate his room for the birthday celebration,” Rin suggested.
“Shisui spends the whole day with Mokutsuki-sensei and doesn’t come home, so it should be easy to do,” Rin added.
Mokutsuki nodded, acknowledging that Rin and Shisui were more reliable for such tasks. Obito and Might Guy were more likely to cause a commotion.
“The problem is, we don’t know where Shisui lives,” Rin pointed out.
“I know, I know,” Obito volunteered.
Since both he and Shisui belonged to the Uchiha clan and lived in the Uchiha district, their homes were quite close.
“Alright, let’s all act normal during training tomorrow. Then, we’ll find time to decorate his room and surprise him when he gets home,” Mokutsuki said after some thought.
The disciples nodded in agreement.
After finishing their plans, everyone headed home.
…
The next day, Shisui woke up as usual, completed his morning routine, and sent a shadow clone to attend school.
Then, he went to Obito’s house to call him for training.
“Goodbye, Grandma,” Obito said as he left, quickly changing his shoes at the entrance.
“Take good care of Shisui. He’s younger than you,” his grandmother reminded.
After a few visits, Obito’s grandmother had come to recognize Shisui.
“I know. Even though Shisui doesn’t really need my care,” Obito replied.
“What should we have for breakfast? Should we get pancakes from Uncle Teshou or dango from the street vendor?” Obito asked.
“Wherever you want to go, Obito,” Shisui answered. Unless it was a choice between Mokutsuki’s cooking and someone else’s, Shisui preferred to follow his friend’s preferences.
“Let’s go to Uncle Teshou’s. It’s close, and we haven’t been there in a while,” Obito quickly decided.
Even within the Uchiha clan, some ordinary people didn’t become ninjas. Uncle Teshou was one of them, running a pancake stall. His full name was Uchiha Teshou.
While eating pancakes, the two made their way to the Southern Forest, where they helped an old lady who had fallen.
“Good morning, Mokutsuki-sensei,” they greeted upon arrival, starting their training.
Obito continued to work on single-handed seals while Shisui practiced Total Concentration Breathing.
“Concentrate, then concentrate even more,” Shisui whispered as he ran, controlling his breathing rhythm and chakra to increase speed.
Combining chakra and breathing techniques drained Shisui’s stamina quickly, forcing him to take breaks.
“The explosive strength isn’t enough. I need more practice,” Shisui reflected during his rest.
His Total Concentration Breathing needed to be concentrated to achieve the explosive power Mokutsuki described.
While Shisui rested, Obito approached him to discuss single-handed seals.
“What kind of gifts do you like, Shisui?” Obito suddenly asked.
“Gifts? Why are you asking that?” Shisui was puzzled by the abrupt shift from jutsu to gifts.
Seeing Shisui’s confusion, Obito panicked, worried that Shisui might suspect something.
“Haha, I’ve been troubling you a lot lately, so I thought of giving you something. Or maybe there’s something you’d like to eat? Like ramen?” Obito tried to cover up.
“Helping each other is natural among friends. There’s no need for gifts,” Shisui replied.
Due to Obito’s typically erratic behavior, Shisui didn’t suspect anything.
Later, Mokutsuki’s shadow clone scolded Obito for not focusing on training.
During lunchtime, Obito’s shadow clone led Mokutsuki, Rin, and Might Guy to Shisui’s home.
“Does Shisui live alone in such a big place?” Might Guy was surprised by the size of Shisui’s house, which was three times larger than his home.
“It seems to be one of the houses built during the village’s founding,” Rin, recalling her history lessons, recognized the architecture.
“Let’s get to decorating. We don’t have much time before class starts,” Obito urged.
“Be careful not to damage Shisui’s things while decorating,” Mokutsuki reminded.
He had chosen easily removable decorations to make cleaning up quick and simple.
