In Mad Hatter Town, death was a normal occurrence, happening almost every day.
However, Lagrin’s death was anything but normal.
The reason was that no one within a hundred meters heard a distinct gunshot at the time of the incident.
Even more chilling than the lack of a gunshot was the fact that the lead bullet had penetrated through a wooden wall before hitting Lagrin.
Setting aside the shot’s power meant the shooter wasn’t specifically aiming at Lagrin. It seemed more like someone had fired a random shot.
As a result, Lagrin became the unluckiest person in the room.
The other pirates around Lagrin, after realizing the “truth,” broke out in cold sweat.
Despite their lingering fear, they cursed a few times, and within a few minutes, they went back to drinking and chatting as if nothing had happened.
A night passed.
At a bar in the alley.
Rat Wolf, who had learned of the event, sat despondently at the bar counter.
Looking at the bartender’s blank face, he sighed, “Tatamu, I’m done for. Before I die, I want you to inherit my fortune so it doesn’t go to waste.”
Tatamu, a burly man built like a bear, paused his robotic cup-wiping motion at Rat Wolf’s words but then resumed as if nothing had happened.
Seeing no reaction from Tatamu, Rat Wolf’s eyes darkened. “I’m not joking. That damned Lagrin wants to die and drag me along with him!”
Tatamu remained silent, wiping the cup, but his gaze fixed on Rat Wolf.
He realized Rat Wolf wasn’t joking.
“Was it not an accident?” Tatamu asked, his voice surprisingly delicate and birdlike, completely at odds with his bearish frame.
Referring to the shot that killed Lagrin.
“No,” Rat Wolf replied, accustomed to Tatamu’s incongruous voice.
He stared at his drink, his voice filled with evident fear.
“I can be sure that bullet was meant for Lagrin.”
Tatamu’s eyes flashed with horror.
Rat Wolf sighed. “Can you imagine having a bullet trained on your head at any moment, ready to take your life? Maybe if I step out the door now, I’ll be shot dead.”
“Condolences,” Tatamu said simply.
“Sigh.”
The more Rat Wolf thought about it, the more desperate he felt.
“The only thing I can’t let go of is the money I haven’t spent yet. After deducting the storage fee, there should be enough left for a few good bottles of wine. I’ve thought it over and decided to leave it to you, Tatamu.”
“No thanks, it’s too little.”
Tatamu set down the cup, poured himself half a glass of wine, and raised it in a toast to Rat Wolf.
“Farewell.”
With a nod, Tatamu downed the drink in one go.
Rat Wolf nodded back and finished his drink.
“The way to eliminate fear is to face it. Goodbye, Tatamu!”
He placed the glass down, stood up bravely, and walked towards the bar door with a solemn expression.
Pushing the door open, he stepped out.
A few seconds later.
Bang!
A gunshot suddenly rang out from the street.
“Shit!”
Rat Wolf’s voice, filled with terror, clearly reached inside the bar.
Tatamu’s eyes narrowed, looking towards the now empty doorway, and bowed his head slightly in silent mourning for Rat Wolf.
Moments later.
Rat Wolf’s slightly crazed laughter echoed through the alley.
“Haha, haha… I’m not dead, I’m not dead! Haha…!”
Inside the bar.
Listening to Rat Wolf’s laughter, Tatamu’s eye twitched.
He looked at his cup, then at the fine wine next to him.
“What a waste.”
Two days later, Red’s death caused no ripples; everything was calm and quiet.
Maude thought he had hidden his actions well, unaware that Mad Hatter Town had someone as unreasonable as Rat Wolf working in intelligence.
He also didn’t know that Thor had lightly dealt with one of the potential threats after taking Maude as his apprentice.
Otherwise, with Lagrin’s cautious and difficult nature, he might have silently struck back at Maude.
Maude was also unaware that Rat Wolf, who worked for money, had been terrified for two whole days, becoming almost neurotic with paranoia.
Unaware of these things, Maude began his new round of hunting with peace of mind.
Late at night.
Maude was ready for action.
Before setting off, he checked his equipment—a couple of flintlock pistols and a decent-quality dagger.
These were items he had requested from Thor.
Before establishing their relationship, asking Thor for weapons was like pulling teeth.
After establishing their relationship, the problem was instantly resolved and became the easiest thing.
After checking his weapons, Maude slipped out of the weapon shop in the dark, climbing up to the rooftops and crouching as he moved toward his target building.
With his enhanced physique, climbing and leaping were no longer a problem.
Confident in his abilities, Maude decided to use a dagger for his next kill.
This method reduced the risk of exposure, and carrying two flintlock pistols increased his margin for error.
After some effort, Maude successfully infiltrated the building where his target was located under the cover of night.
Tiptoeing to the door, he could hear snoring from inside the room.
Pausing briefly, Maude gently pushed the door open.
With the faint light, he looked at the bed in the room.
Not far from the window, on a bed, in the dim light,
“Two people again…”
Maude was a bit surprised, silently approaching the bedside.
A mix of sweat and alcohol stench assaulted his nose.
Maude wrinkled his nose slightly, and as his eyes adjusted to the darkness,
“……”
Seeing the scene before him, Maude silently drew his dagger, looking away from the bed’s occupants. He suddenly had a thought.
“I can’t waste this opportunity.”
Maude thought to himself.
Without hesitation, he stabbed Gadden twice in the back and quickly flipped his wrist, gripping the dagger in reverse, and sliced Gadden’s throat.
The three strikes were swift and lethal, vastly different from when he had stabbed Wat.
Gadden’s eyes shot open, and after a few gurgling breaths, he was silent.
After killing Gadden, Maude reached out with his left hand, gripping the other muscular man’s neck while stabbing his abdomen three times with his right hand.
Awakened abruptly, the muscular man struggled violently.
However, Maude was now much stronger, using the advantage of his surprise attack and his own considerable strength to pin the man down.
Gaining the upper hand, Maude turned the man’s head to face Gadden’s lifeless eyes.
“Let’s have a chat.”
His cold voice swept past the man’s ear like a chill wind.
Minutes later.
Maude left the building.
The black cover of his Hunter’s Log had two more star points.
