Chapter 52: Mission Accomplished
Having achieved his goal of saving someone, Law prepared to leave and continue his tasks. As he turned to go, the white bear Bepo followed closely, grateful to the first person who had shown him kindness.
“Hey, Trafalgar D. Water Law, are you just going to leave like that?” Penguin, who had gotten back on his feet, called out to Law.
“Hmm? What is it?” Law turned back, his expression indifferent.
Penguin hesitated, his face alternating between green and white, before finally deciding. “I want to learn how to fight from you!”
Shachi’s face changed as he ran to Penguin, whispering urgently, “Penguin, have you lost your mind?”
“Why should I teach you?” Law’s words were harsh, but inwardly, he felt tempted. He had already left the Donquixote Family, and if he wanted to take revenge on Doflamingo, he knew he couldn’t do it alone.
So, he was considering forming his pirate crew.
Penguin pushed Shachi’s hand away and looked at Law with determination. “I want to get stronger. I’ll follow you and acknowledge you as my leader.”
The nearby white bear Bepo’s eyes lit up at the idea. He, too, wanted to follow Law and learn, hoping to find companionship.
“You saved Bepo. Bepo wants to follow you too,” the bear said.
At this point, Shachi also stood beside Penguin, looking at Law. “I’ll follow Penguin. Whatever he does, I’ll do too.”
And so, the first inklings of the Heart Pirates began to take shape here.
According to Law’s later recounting, their initial meeting would have been quite heartwarming if not for the arrival of someone extremely irritating.
“Look what we have here: three little brats and a small white bear. What a harmonious scene,” said a voice.
There was no need to guess. The annoying person was Mosen.
Having quickly set off from Minion Island, Mosen arrived at this small town on Hayan Island. He sent his pirates to scour the area for any sign of an outsider kid. It was only a short time before they got word.
According to the townspeople, a small child had recently appeared and was often seen in the nearby woods.
Mosen dismissed the pirates and headed into the forest alone, where he soon found Law and his future crew, including a bear.
Feeling pleased with his good fortune, Mosen approached them, making a friendly introduction. “Look what I’ve found! Three little kids and a bear. Isn’t this a cozy scene?”
The three kids and the bear immediately tensed, unsure of the intentions of this suddenly appearing man.
“Ah, such a warm welcome. Good-looking people are always popular, it seems,” Mosen said, smiling broadly.
‘Welcome, my foot! Can’t you see the words ‘Not Welcome’ written on our faces?’ the kids thought to themselves.
Law stepped forward, his body tensing as he assumed a combat stance. “Who are you? What do you want here?”
Seeing Law’s expression and demeanour, Mosen couldn’t help but be reminded of Vince. Both had a similar cool attitude, except Vince wasn’t as sharp-tongued as Law.
Feeling playful, Mosen decided to tease him a bit. “Trafalgar D. Water Law, I’ve come here just for you. The Op-Op Fruit is quite useful, isn’t it? You even cured that damn disease yourself. A kid with such medical skills must make many doctors feel ashamed.”
Law’s expression changed immediately, cold sweat running down his face. He could no longer maintain his cool demeanour and looked at Mosen in terror. “Are you from the Donquixote Family? No, I haven’t seen you before. Who are you?”
Still boyish from puberty, Law’s voice trembled as he tried to stay calm.
The other two kids and the bear noticed Law’s distress and moved closer, standing against Mosen.
“Don’t try anything funny. We’re really strong and can take you down,” one of the kids warned.
Mosen chuckled but decided to get to the point. “I come from the same organization as Rosinante, or as you know him, Corazon. So, can we talk now?”
Hearing Corazon’s name, Law’s eyes filled with pain, and he barely held back his tears. “Fine, I’ll talk.”
Mosen casually waved off the other two kids and the bear, signalling them to leave. Law persuaded his new companions to go reluctantly, knowing that the information involved was too dangerous for them.
“How about we sit and chat?” Mosen suggested. He casually chopped down a nearby tree, slicing it into two stumps for them to sit on. He kicked aside the rest of the tree trunk, sending it crashing into the bushes.
The display of strength frightened the kids and the bear hiding nearby. Law’s eyes widened in shock, realising just how strong this man was—strong enough to remind him of the high-ranking officers who had trained him.
Mosen felt satisfied with his show of strength. Intimidating Law was necessary to ensure cooperation, but it also felt good to show off in front of future notable figures.
“Let’s get straight to it. Tell me everything that happened on Minion Island from start to finish,” Mosen said.
“Why should I trust you? How do I know you’re not a spy for the Donquixote Family?” Law demanded.
“A spy? Interesting. If I were a spy, I’d capture you and hand you over to Doflamingo. You know how much he wants the Op-Op Fruit, right, Law?” Mosen countered. “And don’t you want to avenge Corazon? Our goals align.”
Law’s face contorted with hatred, and he nodded. “Fine, I’ll tell you.”
Taking a deep breath, Law recounted the events, “The marine spy is Vergo, Doflamingo’s former Hearts officer. When I was delivering information for Corazon, I ran into him… Corazon hid me… Doflamingo shot him… I escaped in the chaos.”
As Law finished, tears streamed down his face. Losing Corazon was a devastating blow to the young boy who had only recently regained hope.
Mosen patted Law’s spotted hat in a gesture of comfort. “Thank you for the information, Law. If you ever need help, you can find me.”
With his mission complete, Mosen prepared to report back to Sengoku. Law might have withheld some details, but Mosen had learned what he needed.
The rest, after all, wasn’t his concern.
