As Agent Coulson was figuring out how to draft a report on the surveillance of the test subjects, an extraordinary event once again descended upon this world.
Not far outside New York City, within a top S.H.I.E.L.D. research facility, helicopters flew above as loudspeakers blared with evacuation orders throughout the base.
“Attention, all personnel. Evacuation orders have been confirmed. Please proceed to the designated stations and leave immediately. I repeat, this is not a drill! Evacuate now!” The voice echoed through the night, waking every sleeping researcher and staff member.
As the announcement played, countless people from inside the buildings panicked towards the evacuation points.
During this chaos, a helicopter landed smoothly at its target location.
Dressed in a black trench coat, Nick Fury stepped down from the helicopter, and the base commander immediately approached him.
Coulson was supposed to meet Fury but was tied up at headquarters writing reports and drafting surveillance plans and arrived late.
“How bad is it?”
“The worst part is, Director, we don’t know what’s happening!”
Fury frowned, sensing something was amiss, and followed the commander towards the site of the incident.
“Four hours ago, Dr. Selvig detected a surge of energy from the Tesseract,” the commander explained the sequence of events.
“NASA didn’t authorize the doctor to test!” Fury remarked.
“He wasn’t conducting tests and wasn’t even in the room! It activated on its own!”
“It just started up on its own?” Agent Hill asked from behind.
“What’s the energy level now?” Fury continued.
“It’s rising! We issued the evacuation order once we confirmed Dr. Selvig couldn’t shut it down.”
“How long until everyone is out?”
“We can clear the area in half an hour.”
“Make it quick.”
“Yes, sir!” The commander nodded and went to oversee the evacuation. Emptying such a large base in half an hour was no small feat.
“Director, evacuating might be pointless,” Hill remarked as they climbed the stairs.
“We can’t just tell them to go back to bed, can we?”
“But if we can’t control the Tesseract’s energy, I think hiding anywhere is useless!”
“I need you to ensure that the prototype for Phase Two is transported safely.”
“Director, aren’t there more pressing issues to consider right now?”
“Unless it’s the world’s end, we must keep going!” Fury turned to look at Hill.
“Get everything counted and load all the relevant equipment.”
“Yes, Director,” Hill replied, albeit reluctantly.
“Also, send a message to Tony Stark. We might need his technological support!” Fury ordered.
“Understood, Director!”
Fury didn’t mind Hill’s tone as long as she got the job done. As Melinda May led the team to evacuate the equipment, Fury entered the lab.
Upon entering, his scanner activated, displaying the data directly onto his eyepiece.
The entire lab was a sea of red without a hint of any other color.
“Doctor! What’s the status?” Fury called out to Dr Selvig, who examined the Tesseract with various probes to understand what had happened.
“The Tesseract is misbehaving!” Dr. Selvig reported as he came down from the platform.
“Doctor, this is no time for jokes.”
“I’m not joking. The Tesseract itself is an energy source. Even though we’ve cut the power, it emits energy, interference, and radioactive material.”
“Don’t worry, the radioactive material is just some low-level gamma radiation,” the doctor added.
“That might not be the case,” Fury said, unamused. If gamma radiation were entirely harmless, the Hulk would never have existed.
“Where are the agents I sent?” Fury continued.
Dr. Selvig said, “Hawkeye is asleep in his nest.”
“Agent Barton!”
With a shout, Hawkeye slid down a rope quickly to join Fury by the Tesseract.
“I thought I gave you a mission.”
“Being up high gives you a better view,” Hawkeye explained, “The doctor should be fine; he hasn’t touched the Tesseract or transmitted any information.”
“Did you see what activated it?”
“No one entered or left before it activated, so if there’s a problem, it might not be on our end.”
“On our end?”
“Yes, the Tesseract is a doorway to another side of the universe, right? This door should be able to open from both sides.” Hawkeye spoke, unknowingly hitting on the truth.
Suddenly, the Tesseract burst forth with energy, causing the entire base to shudder.
This high-energy reaction also caught the attention of others.
QiQi, serving under the master of the Main God Space, always coordinated issues across various worlds, including their homeland, the Marvel Universe.
The level of energy from the Tesseract was beyond QiQi’s capability. With Qi Yun, the Destroyer, in seclusion, it wasn’t appropriate to invoke emergency powers to call him out now.
Thinking this, QiQi approached the control panel, sending a message to all qualifiers still in the Marvel world while also pulling up the Main God Space’s automatically arranged mission information related to the Marvel world.
The Ancient One’s followers also sensed this massive energy at the New York Sanctum.
However, The Ancient One was currently negotiating with Dormammu of the Dark Dimension, and with a directive from the main leader, the New York Sanctum personnel dared uphold their policy of isolation.
The energy from the Tesseract affected the surrounding space, making the Mirror Space they normally used for evasion inoperable around the cube. Not everyone was a Sorcerer Supreme like The Ancient One.
The vibrations from the Tesseract continued, and an energy burst forth from its core, forming a portal at the far end of the lab after a brief pause.
The portal blasted open, and the evil god Loki made his dramatic entrance.
“Sir! Please put down your spear!” Fury addressed Loki.
Loki glanced at the spear and flicked it lightly, releasing energy from the tip.
Hawkeye swiftly tackled Fury out of the way as the energy exploded behind them, blasting a large hole in the solid ground.
Chaos erupted in the lab as Loki wielded the lethal power of his spear, overwhelming the agents Fury had brought along and the facility’s security personnel who could not withstand the attack.
