After thinking for a long time without any solution, the subordinate could only contact the personnel ahead, preparing to force Niel to stop first and then figure out the next step.
Upon issuing the command, Niel noticed that the vehicles following him suddenly accelerated. Before he could react, one car swerved in front of him, blocking his path.
Niel remained calm and floored the gas pedal, aiming straight for the blocking vehicle. Surprisingly, the thugs didn’t dodge, so at the last moment, Niel hit the brakes to avoid a collision.
As the car slowed down, Niel kicked open the door and jumped out, rolling on the ground before standing up with his automatic rifle aimed at the surrounding gang members.
The lead thug raised his hands cooperatively, “Don’t be nervous, we just want to ask you a few things.”
Niel, eyeing the slowly forming encirclement, judged how to break through. “I have nothing to tell you. Step back at least ten meters, or I’ll shoot!”
As a first-time agent, Niel wasn’t sure if his actions were correct, but he certainly didn’t want a confrontation. With so many opponents, escaping seemed impossible.
“Take it easy,” the lead thug waved his hand, signaling his men to stop advancing. They maintained a distance but still blocked all escape routes.
Niel heard his superior’s voice in his earpiece, “Avoid conflict if possible. Reinforcements are on the way. Stall them!”
Annoyed, Niel remembered it was the same superior who initially had him leading the thugs in circles, assuring there’d be no problem. Now, it was a mess.
Simultaneously, Kingpin’s orders echoed in the thug’s ear, “No shooting! Absolutely no overt actions, or I’ll have your head!”
With both sides reluctant to initiate conflict, a standoff ensued. Kingpin knew that openly battling S.H.I.E.L.D. was a direct challenge to a powerful agency, potentially leading to widespread chaos and endangering his plans to go legit.
In the distance, Loki’s vehicle nonchalantly approached.
“Sir, there’s a situation up ahead,” Hawkeye alerted.
“Ignore them. Just drive past,” Loki instructed, glancing at Niel and seeing no threat. His scepter began to emit a faint glow.
The light spread quickly, covering everyone on the road. Niel felt something off. As the vehicle neared, a force from deep within him repelled the scepter’s influence.
[Mind control detected. Resilience check initiated. Unyielding Will activated. You are immune to this control…]
The combat system’s alert made Niel squint at the approaching vehicle.
“Sir, we’ve been spotted,” Hawkeye repeated.
“Impossible. Keep driving. How far to the safe house?” Loki dismissed the notion that an ordinary human could resist his scepter’s power.
The system’s alerts continued, but Niel’s willpower, especially once he focused, was unbreakable. The thugs noticed Niel’s unusual behavior. The lead thug turned, finding nothing.
“Target sighted. Awaiting further instructions,” Niel whispered into his earpiece.
“Are you sure?!” his superior sounded surprised. “Pursue the target. You have unlimited fire authority! I’ll take responsibility!”
“I’m going to shoot,” Niel announced.
The lead thug froze, seeing Niel wasn’t bluffing, and quickly signaled his men to clear a path.
Watching the screen from afar, Kingpin grabbed the radio, “All units, monitor the target’s movements!”
Though unaware of Loki’s concealment, Kingpin sensed something was off.
Hawkeye sped up while Niel’s mind raced. By the time he returned to his car, Loki’s group would be gone. He had to slow them down.
The muffled sound of gunfire erupted from Niel’s rifle, aiming at Hawkeye’s car.
Hawkeye executed an emergency maneuver, dodging most bullets.
“Sir, we’ve been discovered,” Hawkeye reiterated.
Now convinced, Loki raised his scepter, aiming at Niel, unleashing a laser beam.
Niel knew the key to avoiding hits was to keep moving. Since he began firing, he kept running, making evasive maneuvers to dodge the laser.
But Niel’s goal was achieved. The attack exposed Loki’s group, and Kingpin redirected his men, issuing an attack order.
Intense gunfire filled the streets. Loki raised a hand, creating an invisible barrier around the car. With bullets no longer a threat, Hawkeye drove the car like a sports car, cutting through the crowd.
Niel jumped back into his car, driving with exceptional skill, quickly tailing Hawkeye, leaving Kingpin’s men shooting at empty air.
“Follow them, you idiots!” Kingpin roared into the earpiece.
The thugs snapped to attention, scrambling into their cars to form the second chase team.
Setting down the radio, Kingpin grabbed a wristband from the sofa and snapped it onto his wrist: “Stop standing around! Prepare my car and ensure we don’t lose them!”
“Agent 9527, report your location and current situation!” S.H.I.E.L.D.’s command echoed in Niel’s earpiece.
“I’m attempting to follow the target,” Niel glanced at the navigation, “They’re ahead on another lane. Their driving skills far surpass mine. I’m losing them!”
“Follow them at all costs. Reinforcements are on the way. Keep updating your position!” the superior’s voice repeatedly urged.
“I’ll try.”
Niel responded, knowing Hawkeye’s driving was leagues above his. Only various hindrances slowed them enough for him to maintain the current gap.
