One Piece: Devouring Fruit Chapter 66

Divination

Michion didn’t know much about Hawkins’ abilities in his previous life.

Hawkins showcased his divination skills at Sabaody and later used his Straw Man Cards for combat in Wano, but Michion wasn’t familiar with how his pure divination worked.

Tarot card readings weren’t something Michion knew much about, but he was curious to see how Hawkins’ ability-based divination differed from ordinary tarot readings.

Of course, releasing Basil Hawkins wasn’t purely out of curiosity about divination. Michion wasn’t foolish enough to take a risk for such a trivial reason.

Having come to this world, Michion couldn’t impose his previous perceptions from the anime onto real, living people—it would be absurd.

Basil Hawkins wasn’t a pirate yet; he was just a lucky kid who had eaten a Devil Fruit. Michion didn’t know what would lead him down the pirate path, but he wasn’t one for now.

And Michion’s idea of recruiting Basil Hawkins hadn’t changed. Just because he was an anime Supernova didn’t mean he couldn’t become a marine.

If he had arrived earlier, during Garp’s era, with enough strength, he could have recruited Ace, Sabo, and Luffy as apprentices. The changes in the storyline would be intriguing.

Who knows, they might rebel after becoming marines and discovering the darkness within the World Government. Two marines with Conqueror’s Haki rebelling would be interesting.

Pushing aside these whimsical thoughts, the group agreed to let Basil Hawkins out of the barrel.

Due to the seawater in the barrel, Tina and the others felt weakened upon contact, so they had to pour out the seawater before pulling Basil Hawkins out.

Finally free, they saw the boy clearly for the first time.

He had long, flowing blonde hair—though, at the moment, it looked more like a tangled mess of seaweed due to the seawater.

With vertical lines for eyebrows, narrow eyes filled with melancholy, a flat and high nose, and pale lips, he had an eerie appearance that made him look mature for his age.

His face was covered in seawater that quickly evaporated under the sun, leaving salt crystals on his skin.

He was noticeably shorter than Michion and the others, but that might be due to their rapid growth.

“Hey, are you younger than us? How old are you?” Sola asked, looking at his height.

“Seven,” Basil Hawkins replied calmly. Despite his young age, his mature appearance and demeanor made it hard to believe.

“He’s younger than us?” Tina and the others exchanged glances in disbelief.

“Alright, enough of that. Sola, weren’t you curious about the divination? He’s willing to do it for you,” Michion said, recalling when Sola had bravely faced Golden Lion’s attack. He wondered if his presence had already altered her fate.

“My cards should be on one of the bandits. Without them, I can’t perform the divination,” Hawkins explained.

“Is this it? We found it while collecting the loot,” Berigood said, handing the cards to Hawkins.

Hawkins checked the cards and nodded. “The deck is complete. Let’s begin.”

The outdoor setting lacked mystique, Given Hawkins’s young age and disheveled appearance. Michion thought that if they had a tent, some candles, and a black robe, it would look more like the fortune tellers in movies.

“What do you want to divine?” Hawkins asked in a low, hoarse voice.

“Past, present, and future,” Michion suggested, having some knowledge of tarot readings, offering the idea to Sola.

“That sounds good,” Sola agreed, curious about the divination Michion chose for her.

Hawkins nodded, and three straight straws appeared from his body, with the cards neatly placed on them.

Hawkins picked the top card and placed it on Sola’s left side. “This card represents the past.”

He placed the second card in front of Sola. “This one represents the present.”

Finally, he placed the third card on Sola’s right side. “This one represents the future.”

The fact that the small straws could support the cards was odd, but logic had no place in dealing with Devil Fruits.

“Now, choose which card to reveal first,” Hawkins said, looking at Sola with his dark eyes.

“Let’s start with the past,” Sola decided without hesitation.

Hawkins nodded and revealed the card in front of her. It depicted a warrior bound and hanging upside down, with a faint halo of an angel above his head, and his expression was serene.

“Reversed Death,” Hawkins stated, looking at Sola.

“What does that mean?” Sola asked, confused by the ominous-sounding card.

“Death represents ‘endings.’ Reversed, it signifies a glimmer of hope, a revival from death.”

Michion gazed deeply at Sola, realizing he had guessed correctly. This girl should have died during Golden Lion’s invasion, but he was her lifeline.

The others also seemed to have connected regarding the Golden Lion’s attack events.

As for Sola, she still looked puzzled.

Hawkins then revealed the card representing the present. It showed an angel blowing a horn, with peaceful dead figures below.

“This is the upright ‘Judgement’ card. It represents ‘rebirth.’”

At this point, even the slow-witted Sola looked surprised, linking the cards to the recent events during the Golden Lion’s invasion. Without Michion, she would have been dead, so the past being ‘hope’ and the present ‘rebirth’ made sense.

Realizing this, Sola began believing in Hawkins’ divination, curious about her future.

But when Hawkins flipped the third card representing the future, it was blank.
