Michion had come to trust Basil Hawkins’ divination ability after previous readings.
Michion knew that if Basil Hawkins hadn’t encountered him, he would eventually become a pirate.
But now, having met Michion and been invited to join the Marines, Michion was curious about what Hawkins could predict in this new situation.
He was very curious.
It felt like being the butterfly in South America that causes a tornado by flapping its wings, knowing the consequences of one’s actions through future foresight.
Basil Hawkins said with a slightly perplexed expression, “This divination is very strange. The card representing ‘the present’ is The Fool.”
“The Fool? What does that mean?”
Michion wasn’t an expert on Tarot cards but knew The Fool was special.
“The Fool is the first card in the Tarot deck, represented by the number 0.
Zero signifies nothingness, almost like knowing nothing, yet it holds greater potential than other cards.
This card doesn’t have a specific place in the sequence of 1 to 21, making it unique. Being labeled as 0 it can signify both a beginning and an end.
Hearing Hawkins’ explanation, Michion nodded thoughtfully and asked, “What about the future? Which card is it?”
“The card representing the future is The Magician, which puzzles me. These two cards are very special.
“Are you saying that despite knowing the meaning of the divination, you’re still undecided?” Michion asked, intrigued.
“Yes. The Magician card is numbered 01 and signifies creation and beginnings.”
“So these two cards imply that if you join the Marines, it will be an entirely new path?” Michion asked with keen interest.
While Michion’s expression remained unchanged, he was internally surprised.
He also increasingly valued Hawkins’ divination ability. It was surprisingly accurate and useful.
“In my past life, you became a pirate. But if I recruit you into the Marines, isn’t that a fresh start? But how can I help you make up your mind?” Michion pondered.
“After the first divination, I realized something. I did a second divination, which made me hesitant,” Hawkins explained.
Interrupted by Hawkins’ words, Michion asked curiously, “Oh? You mean the two divinations had different results? And you realized something during the second one?”
“You could say that.” Hawkins’ face showed a mix of hesitation and confusion, indicating his dilemma.
“What did the second divination show? What changed?” Michion inquired.
Looking as if he’d made a decision, Hawkins said, “In the second divination, The Fool representing ‘the present’ remained the same, but the future card changed to Justice.”
“That sounds more like the future of someone who joins the Marines. So, what did you do differently in the first divination?” Michion asked.
“The first divination was for joining the Marines under your invitation. Since I couldn’t divine your future, I believed you would influence the divination. As expected, the first result was The Magician.”
“Then I divined purely for joining the Marines, and the second result, predictably, showed Justice. That’s when I realized something,” Hawkins said mystically.
“Realized what?” Michion found this mystic talk frustrating, needing help to follow.
Hawkins, looking serious, gazed at Michion and said, “The Magician card shows a magician with a belt that’s an ouroboros, a snake eating its tail.
And during your fight with the pirates, the aura you activated to enhance people had the same symbol on its outer edge.”
Hearing this, Michion, though internally understanding, still smiled and asked, “Are you saying that with me, your future is The Magician, and without me, it’s Justice? So you’re conflicted about this?”
“Yes,” Hawkins nodded.
“But aren’t both about joining the Marines? Maybe with my influence, you might get a promotion,” Michion joked.
Hawkins shook his head, “Although joining the Marines signifies The Fool, the future paths are entirely different. You are the branch between the two cards, and now I’ve made my decision.”
Looking seriously at Hawkins, Michion asked, “The Magician?”
Michion was confident, not because of some self-important belief that followers would naturally flock to him, but because Hawkins had revealed the results of both divinations.
Hawkins’ words implied he had made up his mind.
Seeing Hawkins nod, Michion patted his shoulder and said, “Welcome to the Marines and to our group. But if your skills don’t keep up, don’t blame us for leaving you behind.”
“Though both choices lead to joining the Marines, the significance is different, Captain,” Hawkins said seriously.
The term “Captain” made it clear to Michion that Hawkins was pledging loyalty to him personally, not to the Marines. In the world of pirates, calling someone Captain meant allegiance.
Michion paused, then asked, “Give me a reason.”
“If I join the Marines, the future is merely Justice, representing balance. But I prefer to follow the path of The Magician, which signifies creation.”
“Only later did I realize that the first Fool and the second Fool, though both signify new beginnings, don’t mean the same thing. I did another divination to confirm this, and the answer was yes.”
In other words, the two Fool cards represented two different beginnings.
Though Hawkins’ explanation was unclear, Michion understood. Hawkins wasn’t interested in the Marines for their actions.
The Justice path might make him leave the Marines and become a pirate, erasing the Fool card’s significance.
However, following Michion, represented by The Fool and The Magician, was why Hawkins chose to join the Marines.
He was joining because Michion was a Marine.
