The van’s loss of control and their forceful push happened in the blink of an eye.
Bella can’t turn invisible but can pull off a few tricks.
She mobilized her psychic energy, cloaking the vision of a few witnesses nearby. In their eyes, she wasn’t even at the scene.
“You didn’t see me,” Bella left them with this mental suggestion before walking confidently away from the crowd, pretending to be a bystander.
Both male and female vampires are good-looking, not because they become beautiful upon transformation, but because only the beautiful can become vampires; the unattractive need not apply.
Edward Cullen is undeniably the school’s heartthrob, and now this popular figure was almost hit by a van, naturally attracting many students’ attention.
Many girls rushed over at sprint speed to check on him, and his vampire siblings were equally stunned. What are you doing? We need to keep a low profile. Can’t you just dodge the car?
Under the watchful eyes of everyone, Edward couldn’t just run away; he had to see a doctor, supported by his classmates.
Fortunately, the doctor was his vampire adoptive father, who, after a pretend examination, declared that Edward needed a few days of rest, much to the relief of the female students.
Then Bella’s father, Charlie, came to interview the parties involved. Given the speed of the van, it was a sure death scenario, now amounting to a murder case. As the sheriff and father, he needed to get to the bottom. And those two large handprints on the side of the van were a bit eerie. Was this the work of humans?
“Edward has always been strong. I checked his hemoglobin and alanine aminotransferase levels,”
The vampire’s adoptive father was also a master of deception, baffling everyone with his explanations until Charlie accepted that “the young man is usually strong, and his potential erupted in a critical moment to push the van away.”
As for why there were two handprints, that’s understandable—humans have two hands, and it makes sense to use both in a crisis.
At night.
The Cullen family gathered to discuss the day’s events.
Edward was initially dazed, but being over a hundred years old, he quickly regained his composure and could objectively view the situation.
“She’s not one of our kind, I’m certain of that. Her blood flows in her veins, and her heart beats with unusual strength.”
The vampire’s adoptive father nodded slightly, urging his foster son to continue.
Edward and Alice Cullen exchanged glances: “She has a unique shielding ability. Neither my mind-reading nor Alice’s precognition can penetrate that barrier. Her strength, speed, and reflexes seem to be able to increase instantaneously, not inferior to ours. She also used a strange ability—”
He carefully recalled every detail: “She was right next to me, and I could even feel the allure of her blood, but she just walked away, ignoring everyone around her, and nobody seemed to see her. Everyone’s eyes were on me. Her ability is unique!”
The vampire’s adoptive father then consulted with other family members who had encountered Bella, finally deciding on a course of action.
“I will briefly contact Charlie to see if he knows about the supernatural powers, then decide our next steps.”
The family of vampires sighed in their mansion. Forks, perennially rainy and surrounded by mountains, rarely saw the sun, making it ideal for them. They didn’t want to leave unless necessary.
They didn’t want to, but someone did.
After learning that the Grim Reaper had marked her as a prime target, Bella had changed her plans.
She requested leave from school on behalf of the Flight 180 crash survivors’ mutual aid association.
The association officially sued Universal Airlines, demanding hefty compensation, and Bella’s excuse was to gain experience and actively participate.
“This is a rare opportunity for me to understand the workings of our judicial system.”
“Alright, Miss Swan, this indeed is a good opportunity and meaningful. The school agrees to your request.” The school didn’t hesitate much in their approval.
Although Bella still didn’t understand how taking a hundred people to sue a well-known company for money, houses, and cars turned into ‘actively participating in social activities,’ the vacation was approved anyway.
Not daring to stay long in Forks, she repeated the same explanation to Charlie.
Charlie wanted to accompany her to Phoenix, but Bella refused.
She was more manageable, possessing superhuman abilities that made ordinary calamities trivial. Bringing a regular human would only be a burden, so she left Charlie back in the newbie village.
At this point, she couldn’t care about appearances. She called her loyal friend Jacob for a vehicle, specifically the pickup truck he had intended to give her as a gift, which she had never accepted.
The truck had no special features except for its durability!
For his goddess’s safety, Jacob had replaced every single component inside the pickup, from springs to nuts, carefully inspected. Unless Death himself could forcibly remove the engine, the truck could quickly circle the Americas without issues.
Bella planned to drive to Phoenix.
She borrowed a thousand dollars from Charlie for the road, packed two sets of clothes, and hastily left Forks.
Her route would take her south through Oregon, then to California, and eastward into Arizona.
She intended to stick to the coastal highways as much as possible. To her, the so-called Grim Reaper was more of an inland spirit; perhaps by the sea, he might not be as formidable as the Pirate Queen.
Once out of Forks and on the highway, Bella experienced a close call with a collapsing telephone pole, which she swiftly dodged by flooring the gas pedal.
Forty days I had not been wasted idly.
Bella wanted to test if she could handle this so-called Grim Reaper in the wilderness. If she could manage alone, great; otherwise, she’d head to Phoenix to seek official help and rally a team of superpowered individuals.
After refueling at a roadside gas station and grabbing food at a tavern, she dealt with some personal needs and continued her journey.
“Hey! Girl, come hang with us?” a dreadlocked black man tapped on her window, dressed in a ragged brown leather jacket, looking every bit the vagrant.
Bella ignored the man, started the pickup, and zoomed out of the gas station.
She had barely driven two kilometers when she saw three figures swiftly pursuing her in the rearview mirror.
The leader was the dreadlocked black man, his chest bare and dirty. To his left was a grim-looking white man, his eyes full of bloodlust and murder, and to his right was a blonde woman.
They seemed to be strolling, but their actual speed was not slower than the pickup.
Damn, it’s those three! Bella hadn’t noticed at first. She could not distinguish black faces; to her, they all looked similar. She hadn’t expected these three—three evil vampires who would have passed through Forks!
Entangled with Death, she didn’t want to get mixed up with these three too many variables.
Rolling down her window, she yelled back, “Scram! Get lost!”
The pursuing vampires were startled. It was expected to be spotted, but to have one’s voice carry like it was right next to them from a kilometer away was not expected.
“How interesting, an unexpectedly sweet lamb!” the dreadlocked black vampire exclaimed just as Bella responded from up ahead.
“I’m ashamed on behalf of your vampire ancestors! How did they end up transforming such an ugly fool like you? Take one more step, and I won’t be polite!”
“Hahaha!—” The three evil vampires were used to having their way. They saw Bella’s attempt to drive away as a sign of cowardice. A beautiful woman with superpowers was a prize catch.
Chase!
The three vampires suddenly increased their speed.
“If you dare chase me again, I’ll make you wish you were dead!” Bella continued her threats from ahead, but the three vampires didn’t take it seriously, considering it a joke.
As they chased, the female vampire suddenly cried out, “Lawrence! Watch out for your head!”
